Anna Treantos

Licensed Massage Therapist

After having open heart surgery at 23 years old, Anna decided to become a Massage Therapist at 27. When the hole in her heart was fixed, she understood how powerful the body is, but also, how tension can prevent the blood flow in our bodies and cause issues that can easily be fixed and relieved by Massage Therapy. Anna graduated from Cortiva Institute in 2021, and continues to practice using Neuro Muscular and Myofascial techniques to reduce tension in the body. She is also certified in Cupping Therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is medical massage therapy?

Medical massage is a targeted, outcome-based treatment prescribed or recommended by a healthcare provider. It focuses on specific areas of the body to address medical conditions or injuries, and is performed by a licensed massage therapist trained in therapeutic techniques.

  • How is medical massage different from a relaxation massage?

Holistic healthcare is science-based and embraces the philosophy that optimal health results in proper balance in life.  Since the whole person is made up of interdependent parts, if one part is not working properly, all the other parts will be negatively affected.

Holistic medicine is also based on the belief that a person is ultimately responsible for their own health and well-being.  Our bodies are designed with innate powers to heal, adapt, and compensate.

  • What conditions can medical massage help with?

Medical massage may help treat a wide range of conditions, including:

Chronic low back or neck pain

    Sciatica

    Tension headaches and migraines

    Carpal tunnel syndrome

    Sports injuries

    Post-surgical recovery

Fibromyalgia and other soft tissue conditions

  • Does medical massage hurt?

Some techniques used in medical massage may cause temporary discomfort, especially when targeting deep tension or trigger points. However, your therapist will always work within your comfort level and adjust pressure as needed. Communication is key to a positive experience.

  • Do I need a doctor’s referral for medical massage?

Not always. While some insurance or healthcare providers may require a referral, many clients seek medical massage on their own for pain relief or injury support. If you're using insurance, check with your provider for specific requirements.

  • How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your condition, how your body responds, and your treatment goals. Some people experience relief after one session, while others benefit from a series of treatments over time. Your therapist will create a personalized plan for your needs.

  • Can medical massage help with stress or anxiety?

Yes! Medical massage not only helps with physical conditions but also has a significant impact on mental health. Techniques like deep tissue massage and lymphatic drainage can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to lower stress hormones like cortisol and improve overall relaxation. Many people experience a calm, centered feeling after their session.

  • What should I expect during my first medical massage session?

During your first session, your therapist will discuss your health history and any specific pain or concerns you may have. After that, they will assess your posture and muscle tension to determine the best approach for treatment. You may be asked to undress to your comfort level, and your therapist will drape towels or sheets to ensure privacy throughout the session.

  • Are there any side effects from medical massage?

While side effects are rare, it’s possible to experience some mild soreness after a session, especially if deep tissue work is involved. This is similar to the feeling you get after a good workout and typically resolves within a day or two. Drinking plenty of water after your session can help flush out toxins and reduce any discomfort.

  • Can medical massage help with muscle recovery after exercise or sports?

Yes, medical massage can be very effective for sports recovery. It helps to reduce muscle soreness, increase circulation, and improve flexibility. Techniques such as myofascial release and stretching can also prevent future injuries by addressing tight or overworked muscles.

  • Should I avoid massage if I’m pregnant?

Pregnancy can affect which types of massage are safe, but many pregnant women find relief from certain conditions, like back pain or swelling, through prenatal massage. It’s important to inform your therapist about your pregnancy so they can adjust techniques and positioning to ensure safety and comfort. Always check with your doctor before getting a massage during pregnancy.

  • How long do massage sessions typically last?

Sessions usually last between 30 minutes to 90 minutes, depending on the treatment area and the condition being addressed. For a focused, therapeutic session on one area, 30-45 minutes may be sufficient. Full-body massages or sessions targeting multiple concerns generally last an hour or longer.

  • Can medical massage help with headaches or migraines?

Absolutely. Many people find relief from tension headaches or migraines through targeted massage therapy. Techniques such as trigger point therapy, scalp massage, and neck and shoulder work can reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches, especially those triggered by muscle tension or stress.

  • How do I choose the right type of massage for my needs?

When choosing a type of massage, consider your specific needs and goals. If you're dealing with chronic pain, deep tissue massage or myofascial release may be beneficial. If you're seeking relaxation, Swedish massage can be a great option. Your massage therapist can guide you toward the most effective treatment based on your individual concerns.
